Lieutenant E. P. Cox, of Hawera, has qualified by examination for th» rank of captain.

The death took place at Fitzroy on Saturday of Mr Alex Mclntosh. Deceased was formerly manager of the local branch of the Bank of Australasia, and prior to that had charge of the Invereargill and Manaia branches of the bank. He was the eldest son of the late Rev. Joshua Mclntosh, M.A., and leaves a wife and one son, who will have the sympathy of a large circle in their bereavement. Deceased was but 51 years ofj age, and had been ailing for some time.

Mr J. A. Millar has been ordered to take a complete rest, and. will leave Wellington for Rotorua to undergo medical tveatuitnt to-day. The sight of his right eye is still impaired, but he hopes to be in his place in the House wnen the session opens.
