THREE WICKETS FOR 564. j (Received May 15, 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, May 14. The weather was fine and the attendance moderate for the continuation of the match Australia v. Essex. The -wicket was good. Gregory (40) and Mayne (22) resumed to the bowling of Buckenham and Mead. The century appeared after 75 minutes' play. The first wicket fell at 134, when Gregory, who had batted for 95 minutes,, was -easily caught by Buckenham. His runs were made by fine all-round play, and included six fours. Mayne was dismissed by a good ball five runs later. He hit seven fours, but gave an easy chauee when 49. A stand between Macartney and Bardsley ensued, 362 runs ! being added for the third wicket. Macartney was driving superbly and Bardsley was pulling and cutting in great style. Macartney skied Carpenter at i 72, but Freeman, in the long field, missed the catch. The fifth century was knocked •Hp in 45 minutes, but when he had scored 208 and the total was at 501, Macartney's brilliant innings was brought to a close by a well-judged catch at long on. His innings had lasted 205 minutes and was a magnificent all-round display. It included two sixes and 24 fours. He gave only one chance really, to hand, and on retiring was loudly cheered.
