BT TELliUHAPH—ittgr? ASSOCIATIOM. GISBORNE, May 15. The Prime Minister, accompanied by .Mr W. D. S. Macdonald arrived.to-.day and was entertained at breakfast by tne Scottish Society. He was subsequently welcomed at a civic function by .the Mayor and prominent citizens. After attending _the presentation to Sir .James Carroll to-night Mr Mackenzie returns south by steamer. Interviewed regarding the political situation the Prime Minister said: It defeat should come., as some have prophesied, it only means two or three upheavals, and it will be the beginning ot a process that will lead to an appeal .to .the country, a contingency which I would approach with the fullest anticipation of success.
