MEETING AT MANAIA.

LFEOM OTTR O'nJ COEEI^POJTOEXfTJ A representative meeting of members of local bodies and factories was held at the Town Hall, Manaia, on Tuesday, 9th inst., at 8 p.m. There were about 15 persons present. Mr Christie explained that this meeting had been called for the purpose of discussing the matter of the Opunake railway and tramway. Mr T. McPhillips, chairman of i^heWaimate West County Council, was voted to the chair. He explained that Hawera people* were not in favor of the tramway scheme, and that he himself was prepared to give way in the matter if the line came within a reasonable distance of Manaia, with feeders. He was, however, still of opinion that one line wouold not serve the best interests of the whole district, and that the railway would not relieve the roads of heavy traffic without feeders, and nothing but the tramways, with feeders, would do so, and relieve them?of the tolls. After discussion the following resolution was passed, on the motion of the chairman and Mr A. H. Christie: "That this meeting, representing different bodies in this district, is in favor of the Opunake railway going through the district 70 chains below the Skeet road, with a branch line down the Manaia. road to Manaia, to relieve the roads of the heavy traffic; joining the main line between Te Roti and Normanby.
