The total number of butter and cheese factories at present registered throughout the dominion is about 195 and 220 respectively, exclusive of private dairies.

On April 9 the Rev. William Rice, rector of Sympson, Bucks, and Lady Sydney Montague Ogilvie-Grant, daughter of the 'ate Earl of Seafield and of the Dowager Countess of Seafield, were married at St. George's, Hanover square, London. Lady Sydney was born at Oamaru, North Otago.

The attention of those desiring really first-class Holstein and Jersey cross heifers, in calf, is directed to the unreserved sale on account of Mr J. H. Pratt, to be held at the Glover Road yards, Hawera, on Friday, May 17, at 1 p.m. The 400 heifers that will be offered are exceptionally choice, and have been carefully and specially selected. The heifers will be sold in lots.

A large and interested congregation listened to Mr H. Isaac's address at Gospel Hall, last evening. The speaker, who took for his subject, "Israel's bondage in Egypt and deliverance through the Slain Lamb," gave a convincing discourse. The large chart which Vas used added to the interest of the address. The mission will continue on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings of this week, at 7.30 o'clock.

According to the Railway Officers' Advocate, a deptuation representing the clerical side of the service waited on the Minister (the Hon. A. M. Myers) on April 18. "We understand," the paper adds, "that the Minister gave the deputation a very patient hearing, the audience lasting over four hours, and that at the conclusion of the interview he stated he would meet them again in about four weeks' time to advise them of the results of his deliberations on the matters brought under his notice."

Newman, M.P., in recently referring to the extremely slender hopes that freeholders could build upon the land policy of a Cabinet containing at leash four fanatical leaseholders, remarked that one of the four, Mr G. W. Russell, had some odd doctrines as to large holdings. At Stratford Mr Russell had said: "During the 21 years the Government had been in power it had prevented the aggregation of large estates in Taranaki. It had prevented the land from falling into the hands of squatters of the class who were so rampant in Hawke's Bay." "Squatters, indeed!" commented Mr Newman, adding that Mr Russell had recently acquired 66.000 acres of freehold land, evidently believing in "freehold in large block for himself and leasehold in small areas for other people." At their horse bazaar, Princes street, Messrs Gillies, and Nalder will, on Saturday, May 18, offer freehold farms for sale on account of Mr Duirs. The terms are very easy and the land first-class. Captain MacNab's farm at Wh'akamara and a small section at Mokoia will also be offered. A motor car is at the disposal of those wishing to inspect Mr Duirs' property, from Hawera. J. At the banquet given Mr McGluggage at Whangamomona on Friday last, Mr W. A. McCutchan (until recently chairman of the Wangamomona County Council since its inception) said that New Plymouth harbor in a short while would be within 60 hours of Sydr ney. In the future it would be to New Zealand what Southampton was to England. Speaking of his work on the Harbor Board, Mr McCluggage subsequently stated that very soon the New Plymouth t'at-Mor wo dd accommodate the largest boats, and this would save the district thousands of pounds annoually. —New Plymouth Daily News.
