Wanting 202 to avert an inning's defeat, Northamptonshire followed on, but mads a poor start, two. w.ickets falling for 8 runs. Carkeek, standing back to Minnett, took a low. catch from Seymour, and Viate played Emery on. Five runs later Hay wood was caught at the wicket, and at 25 Carkeek caught Denton. Thompson and Smith made a useful stand, and 50 went up after 1J hours' careful play. At 90 Thompson put his • leg in front to a full pitcher. He gave a, chance at 27- to Matthews off his own bowling. His driving and leg-hitting were good. At. 102 Smith was caught at mid-oif, after batting W minutes. The seventh wicket fell at 109, Jennings in the slips catching Woolley at the second attempt. One run later East put his leg in front to a full pitcher from Emery. The last wicket added 27. of which "Wells scored 21 by free cricket. The Northampton innings closed just before 6.30.
