COLLAPSE OF A BRIDGE.
TRACTION ENGINE DRIVER KILLED.

HASTINGS,- May 10. The Hawke's Bay Timber Company's traction engine, drawing two trucks of gravel this afternoon, under contract with the County Council, broke through a bridge on the Haveloek-Mangatere-tere road, turned turtle, and fell thirty feet into the creek below. The driver, R. C. Turpin, aged 40, a married man, with five children, resident at Port Ahuriri, was killed instantly, the top of his head being crushed between the cab and the bridge timber. His mate, Laurence Williams, of Rissington, fell into the water beneath the engine, and remained there until the steam cleared. He was scalded about the face and leg, but was not otherwise seriously injured. He was removed to the Napier Hospital.
