Some curious facts are revealed in the latest, tabulation made by Mr G. H. Knibbs, the Commonwealth Statistician \ from the census returns. The tabulation deals with the length of residence of persons in Australia. To Tasmania falls the distinction of possessing the oldest inhabitant of any of the States. He is unique, for he is the only Australian whose length of residence'is placed under the heading of "100 years and upwards." Queensland at present possesses nn ancient inhabitant who has lived between 95 and 99 years in Australia, but as many as five persons are found who claim to have lived in Australia between 90 and 94 years, and Victoria owns one of them as its oldest inhabitant. Thirty persons have lived in Australia between 85 and 89 years, and 145 between 80 and 84. The newcomers residing in the Commonwealth under four years num--1 ber 124,037. As many as 8,667,672 are described as Australian born, and of these 1,108,945. fall to Victoria, 1,377,----219 to New South Wales, 44© 695 to 9^e^ land ' 850,261 to South Australia. 209,050 to Western Australia, and 172 - it% J? Tasmania. At the same time 59,559 persons m the Commonwealth are described as "unspecified" for census purposes. Of the country residents of Victoria one has resided in Australia for from 90 to 94 years, and four in the metropolitan area for between 85 and 89 j years.
