INTERVIEW WITH THE MAYOR OF

SUVA,

BY TELEGRAPH—PEESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. , The Hon. J. B. Turner, Mayor of ■Suva, and a member of the Legislative Council of Fiji, who is at present in Auckland, received a cable to-day statt ing that a gale was blowing over Suva, J>ut that his home there has not been damaged. Mr Turner informed a Star representative that the Colonial Sugar Company has a large mill at Labasa, which is a small township on the island of r Yanu Levu. Its crops are mostly sugat cane, and these have no doubt suffered

severely. There are a number of stores

j at Labasa, and the population is be- » tween 400 and 500. The Rewa river is

a waterway about as large as the Waiiato, and it drains the eastern side of ,-^Veti and Levu. The Colonial Sugar Company has also a mill there, and the

crops consist of sugar cane and bananas. The cane crops were cut at the end of the year, and some of the oat crops planted five or six months ago were coming on well. The banana plantations are v pthe- river on low-lying land, and they would be badly damaged by the stormy winds.
