' Negotiations proceeded throughout the day, and the Minister of Works had fre,queht interviews with the officials of the Tramway Company and the Australian Labor Federation up to the last moment. Faint hopes of a settlement were eventually,; dashed when the call came. The whole of-the unions represented at the Sunday conference responded. The railwayman and fothers necessary for carrying on public institutions remain in, but all others are out. It is. estimated that altogether over 14,000 men?obeyed the call. The city is simmering with suppressed exctement. Thousands of strikers are parading the streets and strong detachments of mounted foot police are patrolling. Everything is quiet. '■ ■' ■ x Amongst the strikers are all the compositors of the Daily Mail newspapers and over a hundred from the Government Prnting Office. Wharf laborers deserted the ships as they stood and a number are held up, and only partially unloaded. The Carrying Company, anticipating a continuation of the trouble, has suspended operations and will send their horses to grass. All: day long the stores were rushed by customers laying in stores, and there was a tremendous demand for all classes of goods. • j
