[Lord Stanmore' was the fourth son ■of the fourth Earl of Aberdeen, and was born in London in the year 1829. As Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon, he was Governor of New Zealand from 1880 to 1882, and was at the same time High Commissioner and ConsulGeneral for the Southern Pacific. While he was absent on a visit to the Islands, the Hon. John Bryce (as Native Minister) persuaded the Government to agree to the celebrated raid on Parihakn. which broke the dangerous power of To "\\hiti —a course which, it was said, did not meet with th? Governor's approval. His influence with the chiefs of Fiji was a valuable asset in the British administration of 'South Pacific affairs.
