THE WORLD'S PICTURES

'Standing-room only" was the announcement, made at the Opera House on buuurday evening some' time before the curtain rose. The special attraction for the evening was the dramatic picture ZigomaiV The plot cannot be detailed m all its ramifications, but, shortly, the story aepicts the doings of a noted and much-feared gang of criminals in Paris, who used the letter "Z" as their designation. Members-of this gang we re to oe founa occupying all sorts of positions in workrooms, hotels, and offices the leader of the gang, Zigomar, filling a menial position in the office of "tin? detective Paulm Broquet. Broquet discovers that the gang meet in an underground chamber at the Church of St Maghore, and although he succeeds in getting down into the vault he finds tnat tlie place is. so. guarded with mechanical contrivances that his further progress is barred.-..The mechanical contrivances used are a triumph of stageciaft, and the detail work is very efficiently carried cut. Some excellent scenic work is introduced into' the ■arama, especially the series of pictures where 'Zigomar goes on a visit to the .Alps'. Nothing finer has been seen in Hawera. "Uses and Customs-in theChinese Empire" was a series typical of the life and customs of the Chinese; and tie "Town of Trent" was another very fine scenic. A selection of comics and comedies made up a very good programme. Those who were unable to gain admission on Satiirday will have an opportunity of seeing "this series either this evening or to-morrow evening.
