BOWLING

The weather during the past month has reduced bowling to a minimum, for comparatively few members of the various clubs have ventured to brave the cold winds and sudden grounds. However, practically all clubs have now duly opened their greens, and with a little tine weather competition would be in full swing.

On Hawera green the only competitions have been contests for the challenge rink buttons and the pairs firms. On Saturday week the holders of the former, Canton, McNiven, and R. Hicks, beat off a challenging team by 20 to 11, but last Saturday they were defeated by a team consisting of Grant, Morrison, Henson, and Foy, the holders' I score being 19 and the challengers 23. In the match between the holders of the pairs trophies, Barnett and Parkinson and challengers, A. Robertson and R. Hicks, the latter won by 18 to 14, the scoring all through being very low. At present there are but few entries on the board for various competitions. No doubt the small attendance at the green accounts for this; but as time is getting on the committee will have to fix a date soon for the closing of entries. Hawera proposed to visit Manaia on "Wednesday last, but the latter club had an engagement to go to Pihama. It is expected that Hawera will enter at least three teams for the tournament to be held at Wellington in January. Some clubs in the North have- commenced playing for the banner f I Messrs Hallenstein Bros, have kindly presented a shield to be competed for by members of the Hawera Chib, and it has been allotted to the champion pairs.
