In connection with the report of a recent speech made by him in Dunedin, the Hon. J. A. Millar wishes it to be particularly known that both in Parliament and in the country he has said repeatedly that the railways had now reached a paying point, and the Railways Statement makes this very clear. He added that if the railways did not . 'v. any deficiency would have to be paid out of the Consolidated Fund. It is reported that at a No-license meeting at Rangitata, near Ashburton, the disorder was so extreme that the meeting had to be closed. A number of boulders were thrown, but missed the mark.
