AGRICULTURE IN NEW ZEALAND.

A VALUABLE AND INTERESTING BOOK.

We have received a copy of "Agriculture in New Zealand," a book by Ilaiold W. Hesse, 8.A., 8.5.C., curator of the Wanganui Museum. The day is k rig past when the average farmer despised book knowledge, and Mr Hesse haa produced a work which should be of \*iy real value to those engaged in the t-^ri-cultural industry. The book has an "advantage over many similar works, because it treats with the conditions of farming as they exist in this country, not as they exist in some other parts of the world. The style of the book suits the subject, and the language is so clear and direct that there is no difficulty in getting at the author's meaning. Vt the same time, there is ample" evidence trat Mr Hesse has stuuied his subjects -n an exhaustive manner, and he has 1 ade accessible to all a great deal inforjiiation, which, were it not for the p:«,ins he has taken in gathering and „oilating it would be of little or no practical use. The book will throw light on many problems the farmer las to deal with, and in numberless cases. should be a reliable guide. Opening with a chapter on agriculture by the ancients, in which a good deal of interesting history is epitomised, the author goes on to deal with the principles of fallowing, manures, and crops of every kind, and the last two chapters treat viery fully of ensilage and nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The book, which is a handy-sized volume, should be a valuable addition to the library of any farmer. /
