Mr and Mrs F. McGuire proceeded to Auckland last night on a holiday trip.

Mr A. Thompson, stationmaster, Normanby, went south this morning on his annual leave.

Miss C. M. Bretherton, of Tokaora, has been appointed to the Hawera Telephone Exchange staff.

Mr W. Johnstone, who has been managing Mr J. Gallagher's business for some time, this morning left for Wanganui, where he has secured a position.

Though Ministers have no word on the subject, private advices, which aro confirmed at Timaru, indicate that tho Sir W. Hall-Jones and family leave for the Dominion in September.

About 18 months ago Mr Lewis Hunt, of Manaia, was instrumental in saving two young men, George and Fred Riddick, from drowning in the Kaupokonui river. Representations were made to the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand, and now a letter of commendation has come to hand from them. This has been neatly framed, and will be presented to Mr Hunt on Thursday evening next at the Manaia Methodist Church. A social evening in Mr Hunt's honor will follow.

At the annual meeting of the Waver-ley-Waitotara Racing Club on Saturday the President, Mr W. Wilson, moved, that the club place on record its appreciation of the services rendered by its late secretary, Mr J. W. Emmerson, and tenders its sincere sympathy to Mrs Emmerson and family in the loss they have sustained. He also moved that a compassionate allowance of one year's salary —£35 —be_made them. This was carried unanimously, all members standing.
