EXCITING DUEL

BEIWEEN FRENCH LAWYER AND

JOURNALIST,

An unusually severe duel was fought on a recent morning in Paris between M. Maxence Legrand, a journalist, and M. Romanet dv Caillaujl, a lawyer, in the course of which M. Legrand was wounded four times. The reasons for the duel have not been made public, but it is known that there was a dispute between the combatants, after which they came to blows. A duel was then decided upon, and in view of the serious nature of the alleged offence an arbitrator was appealed to in order to settle the conditions. His decision Avas that- the duel was to be fought with swords, and was not to end until one or other combatant asked for a cessation of the fight. The encounter took place at eleven o'clock, and lasted through nine bouts. At the end of the ninth bout each of the combatants had been cut severely in the forearm a number of times, M. Romanet dv Caillaud being touched oftener than his opponent. Both men were willing to continue the duel, but in view of their exhausted state the seconds decided, on their own authority, to put an end to the duel. The combatants refused to shake hands as they parted.
