THE PACIFIC CABLE.

DESPATCH EXPEDITED BUT NO

REDUCED RATES,

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT.. SYDNEY, Jan. 25.. Mr Milward, manager for the Pacific Cable Board in the Pacific, has returned from a visit to Canada. He says ■the Board now controls the line of from Australia to Montreal, and has effected an installation which will enable dispatched cables to ■be expedited by 25 per cent. In other .words the cable will be able to deal with 25 per cent more business in a .given time. Mr Milward's mission to; i Canada was for the purpose of installing the apparatus and taking over for the Board the line previously leased from the Canadian-Pacific Telegraphs. The Board can now carry messages over v.6100 miles with only one land line. The old system required three handlings. Asked if the innovation was likely to lead to a reduction >of rates within reasonable time, Mr Milward said: "It places us in a better position. "With regard to reduced cost, the'present weekly average on the Pacific line is 42,000 words. This showed a marked continuous increase, and it was conceivable that if the Board increased the carrying capacity of cables "to a large extent, and the public supplied sufficient business, the rates may be affected.'"

Referring to the All-Red route, lie declared that obviously it would he an advantage to have the cable rightthrough. The Atlantic cables at the present time were practically controlled by American capitalists.
