DOINGS OF THE WEEK

On Monday evening there was an. excellent parade at the club-rooms, several Normanby scouts also" being present. A visit was received from the District Commander, Lieutenant Bishop, and Mr R. J. Eames. The subject for the evening was the second of the series of the camp-fire yarns on the Boer war, conducted by the Chief Scoutmaster. The lads thoroughly appreciated the subject under review, and proved very attentive listeners. These yarns, subject to certain conditions, are to become a monthly feature^ and when the present series is cqacluded it is hoped to have others on subjects such as the Maori war, manufactures, nature study, travel, history, the microscope, telescope, etc., etc. It is hoped by such" lectures to give the boys a good deal of general knowledge. Later in the evening several new visitors arrived, and were given a hearty welcome. During the evening Mr R. J. Eames presented the Scouts with a set of books for the library. The books deal with such subjects as "Maori Lifej Traditions, Customs and Origin," "Animal and Plant Life," etc., and should prove a fruitful source of interest and instruction, and in every way a welcome addition to our library shelves. The Scouts accorded Mr Eames three ,hearty cheers for his generous gift. Quite a number of the boys are attending (the St. John's Ambulance classes every week, and are becoming efficient at bandaging and rendering first aid generally. The .Scouts have much to thank the St. John's Ambulance Association for, for the rapid progress they have made in ambulance work. On Wednesday evening there was a large attendance at the Drill Hall. The lads are now tackling their work in earnest, and the bridge-building, sword exercise^ Indian clubs and signalling squads will no doubt be able to give a good account of themselves at the display. On Saturday three troops were exercised in physical drill and squad signalling. There was also a full practice of the rally, which proves to be an excellent lung expander, if sound can be calculated to convey any idea of lung power. The bridge-building squad, after parade, had a thorough overhaul of their bridge-building material, and also made a few alterations and additions, which tend to facilitate the putting together of the frame.
