HAWERA SASH AND DOOR FACTORY. QUIN BROTHERS, Proprietors*.. The Hawera Sash and Door Factory was established about 16 years ago by Messrs Thos. Twigg and J. T. Quin. The first named retired some years ago, and the business has sin^ce been carried' on by Messrs. J. T. Quin, Joseph Quin and T. A. Quin, withJMr Joseph Quin as the managing partner. The firm has owned several sawmills in Taranaki, but these are not now^ in operation owing to the timber being cut out. Their present source of supply is at Turangarere, on the Main Trunk Line, where they'possess a, magnificent timber forest comprising some 1500 acres of .freehold land and several hundred acres of leasehold. The timber is of excellent quality, being much more hearty and better grown than most of the timber along the Main Trunk Line, and it is estimated that on the property now held by the firm that there is between 40 and 50 million feet. This timber is growing at an elevation of about 2300 feet, which is held to be a guarantee of quality and durability. The bush is connected with Quin Brothers' private railway siding by an iron tramway some 4 miles in length. As, the country was distinctly unfavorable for construction purposes, the cost was very considerable, taking a big gang or men twelve months to complete. % Thesawmill is erected close. to 4 the railway, and is an up-to-date mill in every respect. The steam power used is morethan 100 h.p. A new planinffmaphine, the third of its kind m.the poininion, has just been ereoted. This machine i» capable of turning out 20000* .feet suEer of T-G. flooring in eight wtfrking ours. The logs are brought, from, ' the bush to the null by a locomotive engine. In the bush there are two steam, log hauling machined. The sawn timber is either stacked in the mill yard to await orders or railed direct to Hawera. The firm also hold large stocks of glass, both fancy and sheet, as well as general ironmongery,' tilesj pipes, bricks, lijne, ccMen?; etc., in fact all the lines that either a . builder or contractor might require for the erection of a building, be it a whare or a mansion. Cooperage and its branches is also an important part of the bnsihes's, as also is blacksmithing. This firm are large employ* srs of labor, and the yearly pay-sheets aggregate about £8000. The amount' payable to the Railway Department for rreight alone will amount to £5000 A pear. Quin Bros, supplied the timber and joinery for the Winter Show Buildinga in Hawera.
