EMPIRE DAY.
At th© Hawera District High School to-d^y, Empire Day was fitly celebrated by the scholars. Lessons in history, geoijiaphy, and composition had a diu-ct bearing on the Empire, special reference being made to its growth, government and education, and the cohesion of the colonies scattered throughout the world. Later in the day the cadets parade*!, and the scholars were assembled In the central hail In the unavoidable absence of mor bers of the- School Committee and the Mayor, the- pupils were addressed by Or Mac Gibbon, honorary surgeon to the Hawera battalion. In the course of a stirring patriotic speech he drew attention to the virtues of our late soveieigns, Queen Victoria and King Edward, to onr grand old flap; and what it lepresents, and to the duty our boys and girls owe to the Empire. He referred also to Lord Kitchener and the obstacles which he overcame by dint of consistent .personal effort, and hold him •up to the cadets as an ideal soldier. Then followed the saluting of the flag, the National Anthem, and cheers for Xi \f> George. The scholars were then dismissed foy the rest of the day.
