BOGUS BARON.

WAITER WHO IS SAID TO HAV.ff

PLAYED MANY PARTS.

Extraordinary allegations of fraud were made at Hull Police Court recently against Edward yon Westenhagen, a German waiter, who, it was said, had posed as "Baron Saxe," "Baron Reitzingen," and "Baron Wollen."

The prosecuting solicitor said that Westenhagen had also posed, without having any qualifications, as: — Professor in an English university. Doctor of medicine. Teacher of languages. Teacher of music.. German officer.

"As a German baron," the solicitor continued, "he carried on what he called the 'Dolce Correspondence Lodge' at Ealing, and entered into communication with women on the Continent.

"He went through forms' of marriage with foreign women, bringing them into England, and living on their money until it was exhausted. Then he deserted them.

"Another style of fraud carried on by Westenhagen was to advertise in fo- ' reign newspapers offering to adopt children for a large payment, being a German baron, to give the child a good social position.

"He has also been engaged in the white slave traffic, and his manager was sentenced to three- years' imprisonment at the Middlesex Assizes for similar offenecs."

The charges now preferred against Westenhagen was of obtaining a hundred francs by false pretences from a man named Schaan, who answered an advertisement for a teacher. It was stated that Westenhagen got all the man's money, kept him a close prisoner, and half-starved him until he was rescued by the German Consul. Westenhagen was remanded without bail. SORE LUNGS.
