His Excellency the Governor and; party returned to Wellington by thismoming's mail train.

Mrs W. Gaukrodger, of Eltham, sailed from Liverpool on May 7 by the s.s. Suevic, and is due in Sydney on: June 24. The children were too ill to travel by the s.s. Africa as previously arranged.

The funeral of the late Mr Donald? Buchanan took place on Monday, and a great many people from all over the district from Waverley to New Plymouth gathered to pay their last respects. The pall-bearers were Messrs' James Livingston, James Davidson, G. McLean, R. Foreman, H. W. Sutton, and Howard. At least four of the six: date back their friendship well over 30 years. In the unavoidable absenceof Rev. J. R. Shore, Rev. Mr Brownofficiated.

In consequence of a severe chill, madeworse by speaking in the open air at; the memorial service on Friday, Rev. J. R. Shore has been confined to hisroom for some days. Rey. J. R. Cassell ard Mrs CasselE are just now taking holiday in theAuckland district, visiting Rotorua. among other places. It does not often fall to the lot of man to live to see his great-grand-children married. This happy incident did occur, however, quite recently in Taranaki, the great-grandparents being Mr and Mrs Ben Grey, of Stony River, and the youthful couple Mr and Mrs Harry Goodwin, of Hawera. We are pleased to congratulate the four generations.

A number of vacancies have occurred,, or will shortly arise, in the Legislative Council. Death has removed the Hon. J. Holmes and the Hon. F. Trask, while the term of appointment of the Hon. Mahuta has expired. The terms of the Hon. W. Beehan (Auckland), Hon. Seymour Thorne George (Auckland), Hon. T. Kennedy MacdonakT (Wellington), and Hon. H. F. Wigranv (Christchurch) expire on 22nd June.
