HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

The Mayor (Mr Barton) and Crs Morrissey, Sargeson, Cowell, Whittington, Reid ; Campbell and Pacey were the members present at the adjourned monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council held on Friday evening. An apology for absence was receive*" , from Cr Foy.

CORRESPONDENCE. The Railway Department advised tha ; instructions had been given to supply the Council with 250 cubic yards o" crushed metal from the Mount Egmont quarries in rotation with other order now on hand.

The Borough Solicitor wrote saying that he was in error in advising the Council that the Motor Regulation Act could be applied to the borough. "Registering authority" by the Act means the Council of any borough having a population of not less than 5000 ; in all other cases it means the County Council.

A letter was received from Mr A. M. Conroy accepting the Council's offer in respect of the lease of Robbins square. — It was decided to get the Borough Solicitor to prepare tho lease accordingly.

Mr W. A. Parkinson forwarded plans in connection with proposed additions to premises held by him on borough lease. — Approved subject to duplicate plans and, specifications being &U.Lmitted.

WORKS COMMITTEE.

The Works Committee recommended that applications by Messrs Clareburt and Sheat for extraordinary water supply connections be granted on usual terms ; that Jr Rowe's application for increase of wages to 9s per day be granted; that Hawera County Council be written to asking it to see that Waihi Road be properly repaired as same is now seriously damaged by cartage of metal. On the motion* of the Mayor and Cr. Whittington the report was adopted. FINANCE.

The Finance Committee recommended that Egmont Racing Club's letter notifying intention to give up office at end of September (and asking per--vi-sion to sub-let for part of term if necessary) be agreed to subject to Council approving of tenant ; that Mr F. G. Treweek be offered office at £39 per annum, and if offer declined then tenders to be called for letting same; that the Mayor and Cr Sargeson be ,a committee to draw up conditions and inspect re duties of charwoman; that Crs Morrissey and Pacey bre a sub-com-mittee to meet Mr Wills (with foreman), and with power to act in" th© matter of ejecting , division fence at Zig-Zag reserve; that a sub-committee be set up. to go, into whole of by-laws and report to a special meeting of Council on May 24; that foreman draw up a schedule of good's required during current year,' and that tenders be called for supply of same. — Adopted.

THE DRILL HALL. Mr A: Trimble (Napier), replying to a letter from the Town ' Clerk, ' sta+« H that the'Hawftra drill-shed was built about 1882 -or 1883. Itvnras one of the 'so-called political drill-sheds of the Atkinson Ministry. The'cost was about £420, of which £200 was Government Grant and the remainder raised by public subscription. The building is on a borough reserve. It was administered by trustees for some years, but they found their "trust an unsatisfactory one, and eventually the building was taken over by the Borough Council, subject to the condition that it should at all times be available ior military purposes free of charg c.— -T he Finance Committee recommended that the Defence Department he written to asking it to take over the drill-shed and quarter-acre section in exchange for sections 95. 26 and 27 at corner of High and Albion streets.— Adop-'d. FOREMAN'S REPORT.

The footpath in Albion street from the bai rs to Grey street has been formed. Ihe water-tables in Erin, Albion, Collins, Cambria, Princes and Argyle streets and Glover road have been cleaned out - and the kerbinjr has been repaired. I would recommend that we buy from tn«j Gas Company all the old oxide, and th*t it be spread on the footpaths to kill the weeds. I would recommend that the Council procure another horse and that it be used for the purpose of keeping Hich street and the centre or the town clean and for the removal . of rubbish. "Water Supply— Two wnter connections have been put in and the reservoir has been regularly attended to. Cr Sargeson moved that the report be adopted, with the exception of the recommendation relative to the purrhase of ovide. Cr Reid seconded Carried. The question of the wee-3 eradication was left to"-fehe Works Committee - T HE ABATTOIRS. The manager (Mr E. T. B. Wo-thv) reported the number of stock- slaughterod during the month as follows :—Bullocks 2. heif&rs 43, cows 40, calves 9, «hecp 256, lambs 48, pigs 48. There wore wholly condemned 1 pig and 1 *hecp; of cattle 4 heads, 1 tongue, 3 livers; of pigs 1 liead. The fees amounted to £59 6s. The return showed a decrease of £3 3s when compared with the return for April, 1909. The, average age of cattle slaughtered wa« 5 years. The total weight (hot) of o^ittle slaughtered was 53,4571b5. The heaviest weifiht Oiot) 8401bs.— Adopted.

THE £1552 LOAN.

The Mayor said as the councillors wore all aware there was a loan of £1552 falling due on July 20 of this year, and he would move that the Clerk be authorised to write to th© lenders asking them if they would be prepared to renew tho loan or any portion of it, and if so how much. His Worship added that he did not think the Council could decide that evening how they woutf dispose of the money, for the reason that they had not yet made up their schedule of works for the ensuing twelve months. Cr Pacey seconded the motion. He said they could either reject or accept the lenders' proposals. Tlr 1 motion was carried, and it was further agreed to ask that the loan be renewed for a term of five years. NEW WORKS.

On the motion of the Mayor and Cr Whiltinerton it was decided that the Works Committee make a tour of the borough streets during the coming week, draw up a schedule of new works to be carried out during the ensuing year, and to report at the next ordinary meeting.
