HURLEYVILLE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Rev. Mr Somerville, of Patea, preached his farewell sermon here on Sunday (before leaving for Palmerston South) to a large congregation. Hurleyville leads the way in the matter of unity of Churches, the Church of England, Methodist and Presbyterian all worshipping together irrespective of doctrinal niceties. There is something to be said for the Methodist system of biennial shifts, but there is also decided objection occasionally. Mr Somerville is an extremely acceptable preacheT, and Mrs Somerville ably assists her husband in every good work. If it had suited them we could have delayed the "theological gift" for a season.

Word has been received that Mr Walter Buchanan, M.P., who was thrown from his motor car last weeK at Masterton and taken to the hospital for treatment, is now at his home, Tupurupuru, and is progressing favorably.

The annual harvest thanksgiving services conducted in Hawera on Sunday by the Salvation Army were well attended and passed off successfully. Ensign and Mrs Wilson, the officers in charge of the corps, were assisted by Adjutant and Mrs Gray, from Eltham. To-night the services will take the form of a musical evening, and Captain and Mrs Charter, formerly stationed here, will be present. The hall was tastefully decorated with fruit and vegetables. , *
