FINANCE AND TRADE.

I?RESS ASSOCIATION.!

LONDON, April 8. The bank rate is 4 per cent, for short loans and 3f per cent, for three months' loans. Best bills are discounted in London .at 3 3-16 per cent. ; in Paris at 2J per cent., and in Berlin at 3 per cent. Wheat. — The market is steady, and fair business is being done. 1 There is some Continental enquiry for Australian cargoes, and 12,000 quarters of January-February shipments have been sold at 39s 6d. Nothing is doing in New Zealand wheat, which is quoted at 35s to 35s 6d c.i.f. for t> April-May steamer shipments. Flour. — Nothing doing; spot supplies exhausted. Sales in Glasgow for May shipment brought 29s 9d landed. Oats. — There is poor demand; prices are about unchanged. "A" quality Gartons are quoted at 18s 3d to 18s 9d c.i.f., April shipment; La Plata AprilMay shipment, 41s 3d. Butter.— Market very firm. There is an excellent demand. The Osterley's shipment has all been cleared at late rates for choicest. " Wool.— The Bradford wool market is Tery firm. Sixty-fours, 28^d; other classes unchanged.

Messrs E. Griffiths and Co. are in receipt of the following market report from their London principals, Mills and Sparrow, dated 25th February, 1910:— BUTTER. "Danish. — Shipments to England have been on a rather lighter scale this week, and the quotation, has been advanced one kroner. "French. — There is very little demand, owing to the high prices, but as supplies are very short this suits shipI pers. "Australian.— The s.s. Omrah amvon Sunday last, but has been very slow in discharging her cargo, and even to-day the landing is not completed. At the commencement of the week prices were fairly easy, there being a few of last week's butters left over, but the market has developed strength during the last two days, with the result that everything has now been cleared up, and higher prices are being asked for the butters per s.s. Mooltan, which is due to dock to-morrow. "New Zealand.— There were a good many sellers at 116s the end of last week, and this soon had the eftect or clearing the butters and making way for the agents holding out for 118s. We are pleased to report that the market during the week has considerably improved, and to-day there is practically not a box of New Zealand butter on offer, and as the s.s. Tongariro is only bringing 36,000 boxes, which shows a decrease of 18,000 boxes on | the previous arrival, we certainly think that next week's prices will be 2s to 4s higher. „ . - "Argentine.— There is nothing on offer at the moment, and buyers are awaiting next week's arrivals. CHEESE. "Canadian— Trade has been rather quiet, but this is usual at the end ot February, and we are therefore looking for an improvement next month. ''New Zealand— The trade has not been so good this week, and the top prices -have hardly been obtainable, ana in some cases Is less than last week s quotation has been taken. However, Aye think it is the best thing to keep the cheese moving."
