N.Z. FARMER'S UNION.

HAWERA BRANCH.

A meeting of the Hawera branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held on Saturday evening, Mr J. R. • Uorrigan presiding. There was a good attendance of members. A resolution was received from the Gisborne branch of the Farmers' Union urging the Government to see that the necessary legislation is introduced making it compulsory tor all meat exported from the Jbominion to be graded, by a i Government grader in the same manner as butter, cneese and hemp are now graded. The resolution said it was not suggested that there should be one unirorm grade throughout the Dominion, but that if the experts consider there was a marked difference in quality discretion should be allowed them; nor was it suggested that the grader should be given any power to interfere with the classification of the meat tor trade purposes. Neither was it suggested that he should stop the export of any meat so long as it was not diseased and was lit for human consumption, although it was below the standard of the ordinary etsablished grades, but that it should be marked as "rejected from or below grading" as was now done with low-grade butter, cheese and hemp. The -President said tha matter had been discussed at the last meeting of the Provincial Executive, when it" was decided to refrain from passing a resolution until the branches had given their opinion upon the motion of the" Gisborne branch. 'It was a very wide question. After discussion it was resolved, on the motion, of Mr Livingston, seconded by -fcH© Presideni, to support tlie resolution as forwarded from Gisborne. The President moved that a remit be forwarded to the Provincial Conference asking the Government to extend the facilities for telephone communication in the country districts more than it was doing. He thought that if there were better facilities for increasing the telephones in the back country life would be more enjoyable and sociable to the settlers. He pointed to the great good Canada was doing in the providing of telephones for the settlers. Mr Livingston seconded the motion, which was carried.
