CASUALTIES.
INQUEST
[press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, October 25.
-An inquest was held this afternoon at the morgue, before Mr H. W. Bishop, District Coroner, on James Gallagher, an old age pensioner, who died this morning at Chreyke street. After bearing evidence the Coroner, who sat without a jury, returned a verdict of heart failure following general peritonitis.
FATAL RIDING ACCIDENT.
NAPIER, October 25.
Mrs Phyllis Brookes, aged about 40, who -was employed as barmaid at the Criterion Hotel, met with a fatal accident while out riding to-day. Her horse refused to pass a trap on the Petane bridge at Port Ahuriri and turned round and bolted to near the corner of Shakespeare and Battery roads. Mrs Brookes was thrown, and. she was dragged for a short distance. Her skull was fractured, and she died at the hospital about three hours later. , She has a son at Studholme Junction and a brother at Clinton.
