YOUNG IRISHMAN SHOT DEAD.

| A shocking tragedy was enacted recently at a place callea. Monakiva; about three miles, from Portumna, Co. Galway. There has been a dispute in the neighborhood in reference to a couple of perches of a bog. Some two years ago. the. tenants on Lord Westmeath?s property, agreed to purchase their holdings— the bogs to be vested in an Estate' Committee for division amongst. the tenants. Previous to the sale, a number of tenants on adjoining properties cut turf on the Westmeath bog, but when the sale' took place the outside tenants were deprived of the turf banks. One of these is a man named Peter Gantly, who ■ resides on Mr Henry Burkes property, and has lately returned from America, where he had resided for fourteen years. In the, division f of the property a man nanjed McDonagh, of Tynach, was apportioned what, Gantly formerly held. McDonagh, in company with his two sons, Ned a^nd Michael, proceeded to' the bank on Saturday morning to ciit turf. The two, sons went a sbort dis-; tance before the- father, dnd when they arrived on the bank_Gantly was there. Just as the two McDonaghs commenced work, Gantly pulled a revolver out of his pocket and fired at Ned McDonagh, who fell. He then fired two shots at Michael McDonagh, who at this time was clinched with Gantly. One ball went over the ribs and out at the hip, burning his shirt, but notwithstanding his wound McDonagh held on to Gantly, overpowered him, and wrested the revolver from him. McDonagh's father then came upon, the scene, .and belabored Gantly with a spade, breaking his legs and collar-bone. At this time Ned McDonagh lay dead on the bank. His brother Michael was lyiny a fewiyards brother Michael was lying a few yards on the bank in a -dying condition. The father of the McDonaghs, then proceeded to Baliyshrule" police barracks, where he reported the niatter, and handed _, over Gantly's revolver. •District Inspector Ljpn, Portumna, accompanied by , Dr. Kellv, were J sotm -on the scene. They found Michael/. McDonagh had been removed to a neighbor's house, but Ned was dead. Gantly, who was aKcritical condition, was removed to the hospital in Portumna.
