TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1908. THE TRAM SCHEME.

Delivered every evening: by 6 o'clock in Hawera, Manaia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Eltham, Mang-atoki, Kaponga, Awatuna, Opunake, Otakeho, Manutahi, Alton, Hurley ville, Patea, and Waverley.

Last night's meeting of the Hawerai Chamber of Comraorce — a report 'A' which, appears elsewhere in this issue — should remove any doubfi which might have existed concurniug Hawera's attitude on the matter. The Borough Council last week decided to co-oporata with tho other local bodies concerned in taking a preliminary poll to test the feeding of the ratepayers, and now tkei Chamber, which is fully representative of commercial interests of the town, has through, its* ccmniittee expressed itself as being strongly in favor of tha scheme. Further, it has appointed some of its members to sollect data which is to bo submitted to a public meeting to be called shortly to discuss the. project. The Chamber of Coiiimerce haa taken action in consequence: of a remark by the Chairman of the Hawera County Council, at the last meeting of delegates, that "it was for thosia not satisfied with the present position to con c forward with a scheana" Wa understand that it is not the intention or the desire of the Chamber to relieve the County Council of responsibility, neither does it intend to propound ft. fresh scheme. Its single object — and a good one if achieved — is to prove whether ratepayers are in favor of tha tram on the lines of -Mr Blank's report* tbe total cost to be £60,000, interest to bo reckoned at 5 per cent. If it, be ascertained that thei bulk of the ratepayers support the schema then th© Charabeo: -will ask the responsible I local bodies 1 to proceed, with tlws work. Of course if it were found thait tha money were/ not them available at o per cant the question would need io be reviewed. But at present the Chamber isi not concerned -with that aspect of the matter^ Their point appears to be : If the £60,000 ia procanable at 5 per cent arei the ratepayes's in favor of the tram between Hawerai and Kaupokonui ? Thei proposed area of responsibility includes Wainiato Road District, Manaia Town Board, Hawera riding of the-Coomty Council, and Hawera borough. We hope that tihe committee! appointed by th.2l Chamber will be ablei to gather siuffioiemt information to comvinc-a the districts named that the remiedy for tlio* South Road problem lies in tho tram.
