CONCLUSION OF THE LAMBETH CONFERENCE. ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY'S ,ENCYCLJ.CAL. £PREBB ASSOCIATION.] LONDON, August 8. The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lambeth encyclical, referring to faith and modern thought, reaffirms! the doctrines of the Trinity, incarnation, and historic creeds. It considers materialism does not possess the) strength and attractiveness it onoe did, and urges schoolmasters and university teachers to remember tha pastoral aspect of their offices. A protest is made against any edu.cation which does not fashion the child's character in the faith and fear of God, and insists ,on the teaching of che scripture as a basis for such work. The Encyclical does not recommend annointing the sick as a rite of the church, but does not forbid the practice. Referring to marriage problems, it deplores the terrible increase in facilities for divorce, and reaffirms), by 87 votes to 84, the principles regarding divorce adopted ».t the Lambeth Conference of 1888, to make no general declaration. It laments the widespread prevalence of artificial avoidance and tlie prevention! of childbearing. Whale recognising the imperative necessity for effective visible co-opera-tion among Christian workers, tixe Encvclica<l indicates the remoteness, rather than the nearness of,o rporate reunion of the churches of divided Christendom. It considers it undesirable to change tihe manner of administering the Communiioni, and dc-icilaresi that bread and! wine alone are sanctioned. The Encyclical further^ urges tihe strengthening tho relations with the ancient Dutch Church and the old catholia churches, especaally thosei of Germany; Switzerland, and Austria. It warns membeips^cf the church against marrying 1 Roman) Catholics, and advises that 1 the special mission and * social principles of Christianity should have a moor© prominent place in the study and teaching of the church, both for olergy and laity.
