The High Court has given its decision fin the famous wire netting case arising, .out of the seizure lh Augus^ last, by r the authority of Mr Carfuthers, then Premier, of a consignment of wire' netting imported by the State Government without paying Customs duty •thereon. The main question involved | was whether the Stateß were liable, un-. der the Federal Customs Act to pay ' -duty on goods they themselves imported. The Court unanimously found theCustoms Act applied to the goods imported by Governments 'of the State. The removal of* the wire netting, the Court held, was illegal, and there .was not a defence to this action. Counsel for the Commonwealth asked only for i;he imposition of the minimum penalty.
