WAIMATE ROAD BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waimato Road Board was held on Tuesday. There were present — Messrs T. Bridge (Chairman), W. T. Wells, E. Long. CORRESPONDENCE. H. J. Eaves wrote asking permission to erect a guard wire to protect boxtnbrn fence oh his premises at Otakeho.—Granted subject to usual conditions. •„,',. . , , ~W. C. He was willing to provide the: timber. — The work is to be done. -<mH. F. He thought something should be done to it. ".He suggested putting 'on a light coat of gravel and rolling it well. / ' The Gfiairman and overseer were Appointed to deal with the matter. ■ -. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Overseer (Mr F. Archer) reported as follows: — t . "Contract No. 8, supply and delivery, of. gravel on- . Sutherland rpdd— • Mr O'Reilly, who took over this wOTk, has not put out Othe quantity h^ apecifiedi but about 100 yardi more' ist required, which he declines (to. supply :af the contract price, viz., 4s 3d per yard. He asks, for an advance of 6d per yard. "Contract No. 10, Kearin road, and Contract' JNo. 14, Talkatu road—Considering the weather, . which has kept back all carting -contracts, very good progress has, been ..made with ■ these works. ■ " « . Mr Wells said he would like to see a bit done on the Inaha road; as soon, as possible. -'' . ' - ■The overseer said it would be started, before long. v / • Mr Wells said he had *a 'few oom* plaints about working ..bullocks on the roads, but he could not see 'what could be done. He thought they would have to take the question of' bullocks into, consideration when letting future contracts'*. "' It'was'very hard on fences. Mr Long said it would cost more if bullocks were barred. • ■ ' The Chairman said some of the best contractors worked with bullocks. Referrirfg to the report, he recommended that , 6d extra be paid to O'Reilly for extra stuff required on the Sutherland road. ' '.This was agreed ..to and the report adopted. * *v KAUPOKONUI BRIDGE, The Overseer said it was no use starting on- .the . Kaupokonui bridge until after all the timbec arrived. .■■'Messrs Long and Wells said' the ibridgepwas in a very bad state. It.jWas resolved to write asking for -the .timber at. once. GORSE ON ROADS. Mr Long said there was gorse spreading on the Lower Normanby. and Kokiri; road. „It had. spread from native, land. He thought the Board should write., to the Public Trustee. Mr Wells /agreed. The gorse was getting into! the water-tables and made more work for -the surfacemen. ' It' was resolved to take action. Mr Wells said the boxthorn was also becoming a nuisance. In some places it w^'s nine feet; frofe/the fence line, : RETIRING MEMBERS. A ballot was ; taken to decide which of the Board should retire in view of the' election next, month. Messrs Long, Harcourt and, McPhillips will retire. . Outstanding rates.
