HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON} April 13. The High Commissioner's cable, dat*d London, April 11, 1908, says:— The mutton market is quiet and iolders are firm. Arrivals from all parts since January 1 show a decrease of 550,000 carcases over the corresponding period of last year. Small shipments are expected, and light weights are extremely scarce, for which a brisk demand prevails. Following are the current quotations :—Canterbury mutton 4Jd, North Island 4|d, River Plate 3*d. There is a dull sale for heavy carcasos of mutton, which are quoted as follows:— Canterbury 33d, North Island 3|d, River Plate 3|d. The lamb market is firm. Stocks on hand are light, and the supply meets the demand. Heavy weights can be obtained at a small premium. Canterbury brands osd, other than Canterbury s|d. The beef market is firm. The stocks of New Zealand brands on hand are light. Supplies of River Plate beef are heavy with moderate demand, which is purely speculative. Hindquarters 3|d, fore-quarters 3sd. Butter— TUe market is steady, best quality being scarce. There is a good demand for choicest. New Zealand butter Ills, Australian 107s, Argentine 107s, Danish 109s, Siberian 106s. Cheese— The market is quiet, with a tendency in favor of buyers. White makes 60s, colored (of which there is a k small supply) 62s per cwt. Hemp— The market is rising, and there is a better demand. Wool— The market is depressed, with a weaker downward tendency. Following are the current quotations for Bradford tops:— 36's, low crossbreds, BJd"> 40' s, low crossbreds, 9d; 44' s, medium crossbreds, lid; 50' s, halfbreds, Is 4d; 56's, quarter-breds, Is 8d; 60's, merinos, Is lid.
