ALTON.
{From Our Own Correspondent.! A concert and dance was held here in aid of the public library, which proved a great success, the hall being packed, quite a large number not being able to gain admittance. Mr Gibbs, Chairman of the Library Committee, presided. The Chairman, in a very good speech after the concert, thanked all those who assisted with the music 'and singing during the evening. He also spoke of the progress the library had made during the last year or two. They had now an up-to-date building of their own clear of debt, with over 1000 books to choose from. In this he thought everyone ought to find something to interest them, as there were not two books alike in the library. A capital programme was gone through with credit. Those who took part were Miss E. Hodge, Mrs Scown, Mr Thompson, Miss Gadsby, Miss I. Nickel, Mr L.' Adams, Miss Hurley, 'Mr Hintz, Mrs Fowler, Misses Morison, Mr Pearson, Mrs WilliamliVinks. The dance was kept going till nearly daylight. . The music, which was considered excellent, was supplied ‘by the Misses Hodge (piano) apd Mr Harold A linn (cornet). Mr Allan played last night for the first time for the Alton dancers, but as he intends to •settle, in the district he should be a valuable addition to our social evenings for the coming winter.
