At a meeting of Ihe Hawke’s Bay Land Board to-day a letter was received from the solicitors of-Miss Meinertzhagen, asking 'for a re-hearing of her application for a lease or license to occupy certain Waimarama lands. Mr Eustice Lane, a member of the Board referred to the application from Frank Donnelly for the same Waimarama land. The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr Trent) said Donnelly had been advised that no action could be taken with regard to these lands until they were subdivided for selection and areas determined. A survey was now being pushed on, and nothing could be done by the Board. In the meantime the Board resolved to hold a special meeting oh Thursday, 30th inst., for the purpose of re-hearing Miss Meinertzhagen’s application and dealing with F. Donnelly’s. CIVIL SERVICE SUPERANNUATION. WELLINGTON, April 10. Some members of the Givil. Service who have had 5 per cent, deducted from their salaries in accordance with statute and lodged with the Public Trustee have now signified their intention of coming under the new superannuation scheme. By so doing they are now able to lift the 5 per cent, accumulation of years. Some are collecting sums ranging from £IOO upwards. Yet to-day £6OOO was paid out by the Public Trustee in 'accumulated-interest in Wellington alone. The amount that will have to be paid out over the whole Dominion is estimated at about £70,000. JEWISH SLAUGHTERING. AUCKLAND, April 11. Rabbi Goldstein, of Auckland, protests against the idea, as stated bv the Christchurch Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, that the Jewish method of killing cattle is necessarily, cruel, contending that it j causes less pain than any other.
