"THE HERITAGE GF DRESS."

In a new book, "The Heritage of Dress" (Grant Richards), we are told that more labor and time is given to supplying the world with articles of apparel than to any other affair of life. It has been estimated that seventy millions of. people are constantly employed in making and distributing clothes and ornaments for the human body. No doubt our temperaments are influenced by our clothing, but the effect is only passing, for as the seasons change so the different moods are . sure to. come up on top. In winter, it is asserted, we are liable to fits of mental depression, except when we wear the gauzy and lightcolored stuffs of which the evening gowns are composed. Therefore the girl who wears a heavy • dull-colored dress to her place of business, following her occupation in the dark hues and textures suitable to cold weather, j should make a point of changing her costume at night for something light j and lacy, for such dressing is thought to produce feelings of light-heartedness and enjoyment. In summer directly gowns, frocks and hats become light in color and weight so does the spirit of gaiety increase. It appears that th whole of our attire, masculine as well as feminine, originated in the blanket. First that was worn as a wrap. Then the edges were sewn together, and it formed a sleeveless tunic. After that slits were cut out for the arms; next came sleeves, and them the front was cut open, and buttons were used as fastening. Thus came into existence the man's coat and vest* and the woman's bodice. Another 11 blanket, worn on the lowe,r part of the body, developed into the petticoat and skirt, and when sewn up through the centre became a pair of trousers.
