CORRESPONDENCE.

TOWN CLERK'S SALARY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,— l notice that the Town Clerk (Mr Elliott) is becoming dissatisfied with his agreement to accept £225 per annum from the Borough Council. I am aware' that a competent applicant 1 offered to discharge the duties for a recompense of £200 yearly. Mr Elliott was, however, selected from a large number of persons anxious to fill the position, many of whom, having families to support, would have thought the salary a kingly one. If Mr Elliott is anxious to break his agreement the matter should be easily settled. There are "as good fish in the sea," etc. Let the Borough Council reduce the salary to £200, and failing Mr Elliott's acceptance offe rthe position by advertisement. There would be any amount of applicants, although, lest any misconception be placed on above, I may state that present writer would not be an applicant on any condition; also I do not wish to detract from Mr Elliott's suitability for the position, as he undoubtedly gives every satisfaction. — I am, etc., RATEPAYER: Barmby ' and Cole will sell By auction to-morrow, at 1-p.m., poultry, furniture, and sundries.
