THE BOROUGH ENGINEER

REFERENCE TO EGMONT STREET.

MATTERS TO BE INVESTIGATED.

At Wednesday night's meeting of the Hawera Borough Council, Mr W. G. White, on behalf of the executors of the late J. Brown, wrote applying to the Council to take over Egmont street. Had they been aware the application was necessary it would have been made immediately the contract was completed and passed. , The Mayor, having heard the letter read, said he was going to move, That the Council hold a special meeting on Friday night to consider the matter of Egmont street, and incidentally the matter previously before the Council in regard to the alleged fact of the Engineer receiving money from the late Mr Pikett. The public mind was very much exercised in regard to the numerous reports that were about over that particular street, and nothing would saisfy the public font a thorough investigation. What took place at the Council meeting with respect to this particular matter was altogether foreign to him. The opinion was prevalent that the matter had not been definitely settled, therefore it was only proper that the matter should be put J 1 right. | Cr Wilkinson said Friday evening would not suit him, and he asked if the Mayor could alter the meeting to Monday. The Mayor agreed to do so, saying that he wished a full Council present to consider the matter. Cr Foy said he did not like the Mayor's proposition. There were no irregularities alleged. The Mayor amended his resolution to read, "That the question raised by trustees' estate be referred to special meeting of Council to be held on Monday evening, and that Engineer be requested to attend." This was seconded by Cr Hurrell and carried. Cr Campbell (to the Engineer): Do you consider that the road is made according to specifications, and The Mayor suggested that the question should be left over till the special meeting. The Engineer replied that he was engineer for the road for the trustees. If the Council asked him to report he would do so. He had not yet been asked to report. Cr Campbell said it would be advisable to get an outside engineer to report for the next meeting. A committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs Whittington, Pacey and Campbell was appointed to arrange to get details for the meeting. A motion by Cr Campbell, That the Works Committee should be appointed for the purpose, lapsed for want of a seconder.
