GOLF.

A deal of interest is being taken in the annual tournament to be held at New Plymouth at Easter time, and several members of the local club will be competitors. This tournament is recognised as a good one, and attracted last year some of the best amateur players in New Zealand. The Hawera Club will formally open the season on Saturday. Mixed foursomes will be played. If the weather be fine, members should have an interesting afternoon's play. The links are in good order, the turf is specially good and the greens, having just been cut and rolled, are playing fast and true. In common with everyone else who uses the South road, golfers will be very pleased to see the completion of that portion between Hawera Waihi.

A meeting of ladies of St. Mary's congregation was held in th© vicarageon Wednesday afternoon., when it was decided to holdi a sale of work in November to raise funds to assist in. liquidating the debt on the church building. The Hawera stationmaster, Mr Folia, has induced the Railway Department to j 6iipply the labor for levelling & piece of 1 ground adjoining t' c southern end of the , pJatfown. The work hais been commenced, and it is Mr Falla's intention to have the part that is being levelled cultivated and laid down with lawn, grass and shrubs. The Department is only supplying the labor. Mr Falla states that he is anxious to improve the surroundings of the station, and will be pleased to receive shrubs or plants from anyone having a surplus of either. The question of a test case in regard to overhanging hedges cropped up at the meeting of the Hawera Borough Council on Wednesday night. It was pointed out by the Town Clerk, in answer to a query addressed to the Mayor, that fhe Borough Solicitor required a, better case than that against Mr Rowe, with whom it had been proposed to have a test case. Cr Foy suggested that tKe " Council' should take j proceedings against Mr Kelly, in For- ' long street, as a test action. Ho believed ' that was the worst case in the borough, j Or Campbell moved as an, amendment,. 1 That ay test case Be made against Mr Parkinson. This motion found, no sec- ; ,onder. Cr Foy t l en moved, That Mr i K^lly be notified that he must remove I his overlapping hedge within >a month. ' This motion also. Jaipsed for the lack of a seconder. It was. pointed out by the Mayor that the question, of a test case '^ was still in the hands of the solicitor. I' During consideration of the accounts ' at night's meeting of the Hawera Borough Council objection was , taken by Cr Campbell to an account for ! £8 3s, presented by Mr Hurrell (for HurreJi Bros.) on the grounds that the sum would bring the amount allowed' by Act to councillors, for work done, over the ' £10. He said the Town Clerk shouJd'i take the necessary steps to declare Cr Huirreli's seat vacant. Cr Hurrell said t he did mot think the account would be incJudcd in the past year's accounte, and rendered it to enable the Engineer to tally same. He had only been poid £8 7s for th« financial year just ended. The Mayor thought Cr Hurrell could with- ' draw the account if he wished and pre- ' semt it again later. Cr Campßell claimed . that Cr Hurrell could not do «o. The Mayor, although not positive, thought Cr Hurrell could withdraw il. He suggested that the couociUor should do so, and in the meantime the points raised could be looked into. Cr Hurrell with- ' drew the account, and Hhe subject dropped.
