CORRESPONDENCE.

THE BUTTER ACCUMULATION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,— ln yesterday's issue of your paper I notice an article on butter accumulation taken from the Dominion. In the first place it states that the quantity in cool stores at the end of March, 42,711 boxes, is equal to three months' local requirements. This works out at about 2slb per head — rather short rations, I think. In the second place the article states that for the month just closed our factories" produced 67,000 boxes. The quantity is calculated as follows: — Boxes. Exported per Corinthic, Ruapehu and Arawa, over 33,500 Consumed locally 12,500 Stored (additional) 21,000 67,000 Now, as a matter of fact these three steamers took all the butter made in the Dominion from the sth of February to the 20th of March, except what was consumed locally, or rather more than seven weeks' make. So that the whole of the output at February and March could not have exceeded 90,000 boxes. As to the production for the, balance of the season this will, j I think, be anything from 30 to 50 per cent, less than .it was hist year. — I am, yours, etc., , ' \ D. J. WILLIAMS. , Meremer^Aprjl 7;, '
