DISPLAY OF FRUIT AND

VEGETABLES. AT HAWERA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. The second annual display of fruit and vegetables grown by the pupils of the Hawera District High School was opened in the art room to-day. Altogether there are 400 entries, and the exhibition is indeed a creditable' one. It is ample testimony- of the good that is being accomplished by imbuing the scholars with a love for nature study and hortioultuone generally. The ■exhibition comprises six varieties of marrows and pumpkins, three varieties of kumi-kmni, various kinds of apples, melons (pie, butter, and water), parsnips, carrots, ibeet root, and others boo numerous to mention. Aa interesting exhibit is that of marrow 6, etc., grown in poor, lunmanured ground in the school. As compared with the classes grown in prepared ground 1 these vegetables are of poor quality and of dwarfed appearance. Due headmaster (Mr Strack), -who is an anthusiast in matters horticultural, considers the display quite .equal to that of last year. He explained to a reporter that there was only one material difference in the display, and that was the absence of cabbages, -which he attributes to blight and the caterpillar, -which' have caused much destruction among those vegetables this year. The Chairman of the Watiganui Education Board (Mr F. Pirani) and Chief Inspector Braik are -expected in Hawera this evening to visit the exhibition. The public ane invited by advertisement to view the exhibition, which will be open again -to-imorrow. A somewhat exciting bolt occurred today. Gibson's delivery cart was up near Captain Good's residence, when the horse shied and threw out the driver (who was shaken and somewhat bruised). The startled animal at once set off at a gallop down Regent street, into High street, and round the corner into Princes street. So far it kept clear of obstacles, but at the turning opposite Syme's factory the wheel caught a post and tho vehicle capsized. The horse got free from the shafts, and •was recaptured unhurt a. short distance further on. The cart was only slightly damaged.
