AWATUNA EAST.

• (From Our Own' Correspondent.) A very quiet wedding took place- at' Mr W. Morton's residence on the Auroa road cm Tuesday last, when .Miss B. Morton was married to Mr Copplestone, farmer, of Rawhitiroa. ' Rev. Mr Johnston, of Eltham, was- tbie officiating cLergyman. As the new'fy-weddied pair «re exceedingly popular amongst their friends, many good wishes for their future happiness will follow them into their new home. Constable Hickman was here to-day fixing up things in connection with our local factories. There never was a more capable and painstaking officer than Constable Hickmnn, and by conscientiously doang his duty he has won the respeot of all classes. In conversation with the constable I learnt from him that he had been fully 40 years in the Government service, having joined the, A.C.'s at Patea when he was a jaung man of about 20. His knowledge of the history of the district is marvellous;- and ' this week he e;oes up the coast to point out the almost forgotten and lonely grave of a settler whp was murdered by three raativek'well over thirty years ago,, and whose bones it is now intended to shift to. a proper cemetery.

1 was speaking to Mr Hickman also about the neglected military cemetery I down near the Patea Heads, and he told •me;., he remembered the place well and that some of the finegb fellowfe 'in the eervice were bmried there. Attention has been drawn to the neglected stale oJ this 'place again and again, and it is not too much to again, remind the Patea people that very little would be required to fence in the place, say with an iron railing, so that cattle and horses would be stopped from tramping over the place. In a young country like this we are Ixx> apt to forget those who did the pioneering wo rkfor üb, and we forget far too often to pay the proper respect due to their memories. Satuirday, April 4.
