Ihe local police received word this morning that the dead body of a man had been discovered in an old and neglected whare on the Newberry line. OAMARU 1 , March 22. Donald McDonald, with several aliases, wanted by the Invercargill police .since 1905 on a oliarge of forgery and uttering at Nightcaps, was arrested here to-day. McDonald had been irfasquerading as a sheep buyer at Palmerston, Timaru and Temuka. He recently purchased a merry-go-round Sor £600, and was negotiating for a farm at Waimate to cost £13,000. RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD. DUNEDIN, March 22. The sitting of the Railway Appeal Board was continued, when D. Wallace, goods agent at Dunedin, appealed against his position on the classification list. When the Midland railway was taken over by the Government in 1895, Mr Wallace, who had ' acted as manager fox the company, was appointed goods agent at Dunedin, which position he has since held The appeal was based on the ground that certain officials Who had, been below Wallace on the classification list were now in a graide above him, and that the Department had not kept a promise made to appeOlant that he would receive promotion on equal terms with other members. The Department contended that every promise had been kept- An appeal by Mi G. B. McHardy, machinist at Hillside workshops, against his dismissal for drunkenness was heard. The offence, which was committed outside wKxrking hoiiirs, was admitted, but it was contended that the punishment was - *too severe, as* the incident which led to appellant's dismissal constituted the only lapse of the kind on his part. The manager and foreman testified that appellant was punctual and attentive to his work, and they had never seen him showing any signs of drinking. The Board resjerved decision in each case. BADDELEY V. NIXON. WANGANUI, March 23. In the Supreme Court this morning in the case Baddeley v. Nixon, costs on the highest scale were allowed against the plaintiff.
