HOLIDAY.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION.!

SYDNEY, March 22.

Recently the coaling of steamers has been hampered owing to numbers of coal lumpers declining to work on Saturday afternoons.

The Steam- Collier Owners' and Coal Stevedores' Associations applied to the AnbLtration Court to amend the award ■so ias to require lumpers, to woiric whenever required-, excepting between midnight on Saturday and midnight on Sunday ; also, that employers be relieved from the obligation of employing unionists.

The Presidenit, in granting the withdrawal of preference from tftie Union, said the mien, hod cleanly disregarded the intention of the award, and the employees should be relieved of the hampering provision of preference to Unioniste, whion prevented .employers to a great extent from defending themselves.

Another member of the Court declared the men ihad taken a very wrong stand in mot accepting the offer of the Couirt that .they should hold! a conference with the employers. They should make every effort before taking an extreme step. . He strongly urged them again to consider -the question of a. conf«renice. The Presidenit promised to give attention to the other requests of the owners to-morrow.
