The Rev Rodney Swope, rector of the Vanderbilt church at Ashville, said the other night mi the course of aai address :

"Subtle attacks are most wounding. 1 You have heard about the clergyman and •his aged parishioner?

"The parisniomer said that he thought clergyman should be better paid.

"I am pleascdr to hear you say that, Brother Brown," exclaimed the clergyman, beaming with good will and happiness. 'It rejoices my heart to hear you say that.'

"' 'Yes,' resumed the parishioner thought iilly ; 'we'd get a better class of mem then.' "
