The fifth annual sports gathering, of the Mangatoki Athletic Club was held at Mangotoki on Thursday arternoon. The grounds chosen for the meeting, Mr R. J. Idmn's, on €he "corner of the TT.ast.ingp; asnd Opunake-Eltham roads, is a nice sunny spot, but well sheltered from toe winds by Mgh trees. There was a large attendance, and everything was in finst-clase working order, thanks to the Secretary (Mr H. L. Marsh) and his committee. The I-aponga. Brass Band was in attendance, and played a programme -whioh was not only very enjoyable, but a decided credit to the organisation. From a sporting point of view the meeting was a success. ,The running events were oontesbed by big fields, and the times were very fair considering the slight ,diea^.vaiotages of, the track. The high jumping was very keenly contested. There was a good number of staiteffs, but as tihe bar was raised the number quickly fell away to four— D. Deegan, Pihama, C. .Robinson, and H. Johnston. After a keen fight the lastnamed two decided' to divide the stake, .both' failing to clear sft sins. The wrestling was. won by 1 J. J. o ?Dea.? Dea. Eight competed 1 , and some exciting bouts, wero^ witnessed. The .h^indicapper (Mr F. E. Hardy) had a difficult t^usk, 'but did hfe work with remarkably good -judgment.
