EXHIBITION NOTES,

(My Telegraph —Special Service.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 20. The weather ito-day was brighter than yesterday for the second day of the fir© brigade competitions on the Exhibition sports ground, but a. chill wind blew continuously, and by evening had increased almost to a gale. The competitions were of even more spectacular interest than, fhosa of yesterday, and the attendance of the public was much larger than on the \ opening day In the evening, despite the v unpropitious weather, an immense crowd wjitnessed the spectaouJar d'emonstflation of "fighting 'the flames" by city fixe brigades. The display was accompanied* by the eleventh exhibition of fireworks. Only two more of these fireworks entertainmenit6 will be given, one on Wednesday next, and the final one <m the night of Easter Monday, when a specially extensive and elaboiia/te display will be given,, in- wjbich the whole of the remaining stock of fireworks will be used. From ■the point of view of attendance, these displays ,of firework© have been quite the most potent attractions that the Exhibition has .seen since its inception. The fact that they can be witnessed without extra charge may have something to do with their popularity, but whatever kind of weather is experienced, they never fail to draw a crowd of many thousands to the Exhibition grounds. Seventy boats ,are expected to take part in the torchlight procession to be held on the Avon on Tbuasday night in connection with the fire brigades demonstration. The procession will be .beaded by several motor launches filled with bandsmen, and 1 firemen bearing torches and discharging ftaeworks will fill the smaller ■craft. There .has been a slight misunderstanding between tbe authorities in Tegard to some of the attractions advertised to take place in connection with physical development competitions, and search for a bumied nugget in "Wonderland" on Friday. Some adverse comment having been made against the proposals of "WondeTland" management to offe/r prizes for the most handsome female arm and shoulder and tihe most .handsome .female ankle, to be exposed bare, Mr Mxinro notified the manager of "Wonderland" thait he had not given permission to tbe beauty show, and lin the meantime tbe item must be withdrawn. Th© manager of "Wonderland," howevietr, states that the competitions indicated are comprised in physical oultuxe contests which were duly authorised, and that they wiil be held accordingly, the offer for a prize for the prettiest giiil in Christchuircn being withdrawn, -ajs .constituting the only beauty .show; oja jthe; programme. Mr Mnuxo has nuade it plain that he did not understand the position so, and states that though he ihas 'given pietrmissLoin for the .holding of physical development competitions, he still reserves to himself the right to see that (they aite casraded out in a proper manner, ondi if he "bakes, exception to amy feature it will have to be stopped iat once. The "Wonderland" proprietary state that tbe ■competitions' will be so managed that there will be no opportunity for .anyone to cavil. To-day's attendance was 15,906. Notice is given that Messrs J. R. Stewart and Co. will hold a 'horse fair at their yards at Opunake on Saturday, March 23rd, when draughts, hacks, .and carriage horses will be offered for sale. Entries are solicited. The same firm wiflU hold their usual stock sale at the same yards on Monday, March 25, particulars of which are advertised! elsewhere. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London office: — Wool sales progress firmly. As compa/recf with Bast sales' closing fates prices are about 5 per cent higher for coarse greasy ■crossbred and crossbred slipe; about the same for medium greasy crossbred. "JNot.ua.ug could be worse for the system than some of those violent cathartics or purgatives- that some people take to move their bowels. They frequently cause constipation, sometimes inflammation. Chamberlain's Tablets bring on a natural action, mildly and gen<Jy, which cures the real trouble without dangerous after effects. For sale by W. K. Wallace, chemist, afld~ H. E. Harris, grocer.
