THE TECHNICAL SCHOOL MEETING.

It was satisfactory to see go good a meeting on Tuesday evening to further the proposal to establish a technical school in llawera, and the response so far to the appeal for subscriptions has been most satisfactory. As we understand the matter the Education Board in pursuance of a forweird policy —^w-adh has for some years past been a characteristic of the Wanganui jßoard and Toas latterly been emulated by other Boa<rdsi — is anxious that as far as may be possible opportunities for technical education may be available" to country ch_.dren as well as to. town children, and recognising that Hawera is a most convenient centre it is desirous of seeing .a 9chool here. The General Government offers inducements for the establishment of such schools. But it is necessary that there should be s,cme local effort, presumably to show that the people of the locality take an active interest in the question. The demand on local patriotism, however, | does ''not seem to be excessive, and from the start made it is Kkely that it will be easily met in the case of Hawera.
