FD3ST DAY'S RESULTS.

CHRISTCHURCH, Maich 19. The biennial demonstration under the auspices of the New Zealand Fire Brigades Association opened on the Exhibition sports ground thi9 afternoon in anything but favorable weather.
The following are the results so far :-^ Manual Engine (dry), for three men; Ist prize £15. 2nd £8, 3rd £5, 4tlh £3. (Jhr"st church, 47 2-ssee (including lsec
penalty) 1 Tirnaru, 47 3-ssec (2sec penalty) 2 \apier, 48 4-ssec (2sec penalty) 3 Hawera (49 2-ssec) were fourth. Spit, Ivumara, Kaiapoi, Temuka, Gore, Eastown ■Railway, Masterton, Hastings, Westport, Htokitika, Greymbuth, Petone, Waipawa, Dupedin, Ashburton : Caiterton, Gisborne, Geraldine also competed. The contests for manual engine (dry) for one man, coupling event for two men, and h,osi& and reel ladders for five men I were also commenced. In coupling event Hawera's time was 39 2-ssec (2sec penalty). Other times ranged from Chxistchurch City 36sec (2sec penalty) up to Rkxss 55sec. Stratford's time was 45 l-ssec (4sec penalty).
